“It’s a tough decision. The slut in me wants to be with Asami, but the smart and sensible guy in me should probably go for Korra. But Asami is still really hot.”— David Faustino (Mako’s voice actor) when questioned about his ship for The Legend of Korra
Why does it seem like nobody’s as appalled as I am that he implies he’d have to be a slut to want to be with Asami? Or that “smart and sensible” wouldn’t go for her?
No, I’m definitely really bothered by this. If I was Mako, I’d definitely go for Asami over Korra - not because she’s pretty and rich - but she’s also a good person. Just… dammit why.
I think he was trying to make a joke, but it fell very flat. It’s been bothering me all day.Just imagine being there.
Okay, so I’m back home and on my computer so I can put my thoughts down on the experience.
So first impression of the guy. I go in with my sketchbook to have him sign on a page and the page was featuring some Masami fanart and he says, “Woah. That’s cool! Yeah, Asami’s pretty hot, isn’t she?” And it caught me a bit off-guard. Actually everything about this encounter caught me a bit off-guard. But I nod and say “Yeah, she’s a beautiful character.”
From the very start he seems like the kind of guy that probably parties or hangs out with a lot of people (I remember him actually mentioning staying out late the night before briefly to the guy running the booth). Probably is seen as the funny guy. I think whenever answering my question he didn’t take it seriously or I’m not even sure if he takes his role on the show very seriously. He was pretty casual about it. So asking about ships, I think he was trying to throw me and my friends a bone and be humorous about it (there was actually a bit more to that quote but I made it a little more concise. He still said all that basically). He did get some laughing out of us. Mostly because we were a bit shocked at what he said and his expressions.
Afterward, we talked about it and how it was offensive to Asami, but what I really take away from this is that Mako is just another role for David at the end of the day. It’s something he’s very casual about because it was just another job that he did and completed over a year ago technically.
This isn’t much of a defense of what he said. I don’t think it was right (Asami deserves MUCH more credit than that) and the encounter doesn’t sit well with me because of that (I really wish I hadn’t asked now), but I’m just gonna try and let it go right now.
Probably gonna go work on some Borra fanart.
Yep.
Oh god, that’s dreadful. I don’t think I even have to explain what it so shitty with that quote. If I had a problem with shipping Makorra before because of how crappy Mako’s been, there’s now the added dilemma that his VA is a bit of a douchebag.
