I totally disageee. ATLA handles non-bender in a totally different way. I thought “Sokka’s Master” was a perfect example of that. But if you want further proof; Suki, Yue, Mai, Ty Lee, (Yu Yan archers) and Jet are all example of characters that get interesting and complex storylines that relate to their status as non-benders. 

So no, in ATLA non-benders are seen as the equal of benders, and they are shown to be just as capable fighters. The narrative never looks down on them. In LOK that’s a completely different matter, so I won’t go into that. But for ATLA it’s absolutely great. Seriously. Mai is a perfect example.
