No, I don’t think so. Gene Yang is essentially just writing glorified fan fiction with pictures. Although I think it’s pretty poorily written and has a bad case of the writers opinions seeping into the work, it’s completely harmless.
M. Night Shyamalan on the other hand had the ability to bring Avatar to the widest audience, he had a chance to seriously raise this shows profile and facilitate millions more to tune in. Instead he created a film that was about as offensive and detached from the original source material as one could get. Millions of people now have a completely warped impression of what Avatar is, the film would have hurt the creators really deeply and above all it contributed to the perennial problem white people taking the roles no matter the racial background of the character.
So no, I think M. Night Shyamalan safely retains his title.
