I understand that Yakone and co. clearly had a way to bend outside of what was previously thought possible, but I am pretty sure one still needs to be a physical conduit for the energy. So I was curious to know your thoughts on it.

I think Yakone is the head of a bending triad. And my guess is that his bros have come to break him out of the trial. So I don’t think he’s the one bloodbending, I think there are people we can’t see.
